Mathematics and Numeracy

In the new Curriculum for Wales, Mathematics and Numeracy in the primary school curriculum is one of six key Areas of Learning and Experience, emphasising not only mathematical knowledge but also the ability to apply it meaningfully in real-world contexts. Schools design learning around five inter-related mathematical proficiencies — conceptual understanding, communication using symbols, fluency, logical reasoning and strategic competence — which help pupils build deep, connected mathematical thinking rather than just memorising facts.

In our setting, mathematical skills are taught discreetly during focused Maths sessions, where children are introduced to new concepts, strategies and vocabulary in a clear and structured way. Pupils are then given opportunities to apply and deepen these skills independently through MILE challenges, where they can explore, practise and problem-solve in meaningful contexts. This approach supports children in developing confidence, independence and a secure understanding of maths by transferring what they have learned into purposeful, child-led learning experiences.
