Health and Well-being

In the new Curriculum for Wales, Health and Well‑being helps children develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to keep their bodies healthy, care for their mental well‑being, build positive relationships and make safe, informed choices. It sits alongside Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) and Physical Education (PE) to support the whole child.

Children learn by experiencing, reflecting, discussing and practising real‑life skills. Through RSE, they explore feelings, respect, consent, boundaries, kindness and inclusion, so they can form healthy, safe relationships and communicate effectively. Through PE, they develop physical competence, confidence and enjoyment of movement, learning about fitness, effort, teamwork and goal‑setting.

The focus is not just on knowing “what is healthy”, but on managing emotions, resolving problems, showing respect, staying safe and being active. Learners build resilience, empathy and self‑awareness, and they practise making positive choices that support themselves and others — in school, at home and in the wider community.
